Winter's Koi Captivity

The Koi pond at McBurns on Main iced over for the first time this winter, during this recent cold snap. As I watch the aerator continue to keep the nearly frozen surface moving, I just marvel at the resiliency of nature. Nearly 50 fish continue to reside in the icey, murky water, rarely moving about. Just blobs of orange and yellow, suspended within a hibernation-like state. Not eating, or mating, barely moving.
Yet in a few short months, as the water warms above 50 degrees, they'll return. They'll all but jump from the pond to let us know it's time - it's time to eat, it's time to get back to our feeding schedule, it's time for them to embrace life.
No matter how many seasons unfold, it still seems unfair that we're not feeding them at 7 and 5, that we're not cleaning and skimming, insuring the quality of water is maintained. That for up to 5 months, we just let them be. And they survive.
You just got to love it!
